Many of our students are general dentists and office administrators exploring the possibilities of billing medical insurance to see if it is a good fit for their practice. This course will provide the basics of medical billing for medically necessary procedures and give participants the confidence to implement a system of their own.

The significance of billing medically necessary procedures to medical insurance carriers is very important in today’s market. By understanding the medical billing process, your dental practice will be able to submit claims properly and obtain benefits for patients that otherwise may not accept treatment. In this course you will learn how to recognize potential cases for medical billing. You will discover the who, what, why, when, where, and how, of submitting claims properly.

Starting with the theory of billing medically necessary procedures, you will learn how to identify patients that may might qualify for medical billing.  Next, explore the importance of key documents and how to complete them in SOAP format.  Sample templates are available in the resource section of this class.

The implementation section of the class will show you step by step how to fill out a claim form.  You will learn which tools or resources work best for your practice, beginning with software and clearinghouses.

The last section contains 8 case studies of frequently encountered situations, along with completed examples of medical claim forms.  Cases include Sleep Apnea, TMD and Trauma claims.  All hand outs and resources can be printed for your reference.

Please realize this video is not a complete, comprehensive package.  Some information is beyond the scope of this course, and you will still need some on the job training.  Nevertheless, the information you will receive and the knowledge you will gain, along with your desire to succeed, will be of great benefit to both you and the practice.

Prerequisites

This course assumes you are already in the dental profession and are familiar with dental procedures and terminology.

Here is the course outline:

Theory

You will learn some of the reasons why you would want to bill medical insurance when possible, the patients who might be eligible for benefits, and dental procedures that may apply. We will also talk about the role of the doctor as well as the role of staff in developing a successful billing program.

Key Documents

Key documents are very important in the billing process. They include the Comprehensive Medical Exam, a Letter of Necessity, and the Operative Report. Other forms and documents are also discussed and can be referenced in the resource section

Implementation

You will learn how to implement a medical billing system into your practice. Claim filling software, clearing houses and third party billing services are discussed. Other needed information includes the successful use of CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS codes, along with modifiers.

The Claim Form

The CMS 1500 Medical Claim Form is reviewed box by box. in accordance with insurance carrier requirements. Detailed written instructions are available to be printed from the resource section.
